Malvani Fish Fry

Malvani cuisine dominates the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra. It is its own distinct way of preparation and today, is a common method of cooking in homes all through the state. Malvani fish is part of the coastal regions’ staple diet. It’s healthy, delicious and an absolute gastronomic delight!

Ingredients

  • Surmai (King fish) 1 large cut into 2 pieces
  • Rice flour ½ cup
  • Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder 3 tsp
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Garlic paste 1 tbsp
  • Ginger paste 1 tbsp
  • Freshly chopped coriander leaves
  • Lemon juice as required
  • Salt to taste

Preparation

  • Marinate the fish pieces in some salt, turmeric powder, 1 tsp red chilli powder and some lemon juice. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  • Mix the ginger and garlic pastes, 2 tsp red chilli powder and salt in a bowl. Apply the mix over the fish pieces and roll them in the rice flour, shaking excess flour off.
  • Heat oil on a non-stick pan. Place the fish pieces on the pan and cook (and flip) until each side is golden.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and a lemon slice and serve hot!
