Maharashtra's Amti Dal is the epitome of delicious home cooked food that is both comforting and scrumptious at the same time. Extremely easy and quick to prepare, a bowl of Amti dal with rice or roti makes for a light, healthy meal. Moderately spicy and packed with the flavour of Goda masala, it's a dish your family and house guests alike will thoroughly enjoy.


  • Tuvardaal/arhardaal 1 cup
  • okums 2-3
  • Grated jaggery 1tsp
  • Green chillies 2
  • Coriander finely chopped ½ cup
  • Goda masala 2 tbsp
  • Garam masala ¼ tsp
  • Coriander seed ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder ¼ tsp
  • Mustard seeds/rai ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves/kadipatta
  • Asafoetida/hing a pinch
  • Oil or ghee 2 tsp
  • Grated coconut 2 tbsp (Optional)
  • Salt to taste


  • Soak kokams in half cup of water. Keep aside.
  • Pressure cook daal with 3 cups of water till it is very soft (mashable consistency), about 6 whistles.
  • Once cooker cools down, remove water and keep aside. Mash daal slightly with the back of a spoon.
  • Squeeze kokum pulp in the water. Mix this water and residual water of daal together. Keep aside.
  • In a pan, heat oil. Add seeds, curry leaves, allow to splutter.7. Add slit chillies, cloves, bay leaf, and sauté for one minute.
  • Add the boiled dal and let it simmer for a minute. Add daal and kokum water, goda masala, grated coconut (optional), salt and jaggery, bring to a boil and simmer for 8-10 minutes till it reaches desired consistency.

Garnish with chopped coriander!

Serve hot with steamed rice
